Firefighters from Mount Pearl fire station responded just before 8:00 a.m. this morning to reports of a vehicle on fire in Ashford Drive in Mount Pearl. Firefighters arrived and were met with smoke and fire coming from a vehicle parked in the driveway. Crews quickly laid an attack line to knock down the flames before it could spread into two nearby homes. Two homes sustained damage as a result of the fire. The RNC is reminding residents to take precautions to protect their homes and personal property as the summer months typically see an increase in break-ins and thefts from vehicles. The RNC said summer has historically brought the highest number of reported break-and-enters in its jurisdictions. Police also noted a noticeable increase in thefts from vehicles. Drivers across Newfoundland and Labrador will see some relief at the pumps today as maximum fuel prices dropped across the province. Linegar Avenue in Shea Heights will be closed today to accommodate the Shea Heights Folk Festival. The closure will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug. 15 between Harry Yetman Shea Heights Park and Horlick Avenue. Traffic will be diverted to Horlick Avenue during the closure.
