RNC warns residents to take steps to prevent property theft

The RNC is reminding residents to take precautions to protect their homes and personal property as the summer months typically see an increase in break-ins and thefts from vehicles.

The RNC said summer has historically brought the highest number of reported break-and-enters in its jurisdictions. Police also noted a noticeable increase in thefts from vehicles.

The crimes as largely opportunistic and securing belongings and remaining aware of surroundings can help deter thieves.

The RNC is offering several tips to help residents protect their property, including:

• Keeping valuables out of sight and securing them inside a home, garage or shed.

• Removing wallets and other valuables from vehicles.

• Avoiding hiding house keys outside or leaving vehicle keys inside vehicles. Leave a spare house key with a trusted neighbour or friend.

• Removing ladders, garden equipment and work tools from the property, as they could potentially be used to gain entry to a home.

• Securing homes and surrounding areas and keeping exterior areas well lit.

• Storing valuable or irreplaceable items in a safe location and out of plain sight.

• Making homes appear occupied while residents are away by putting lights on timers, leaving a radio on and asking a neighbour to check on the property, mow the lawn or move vehicles in the driveway.

• Avoiding advertising absences from home on social media.
