Labrador Affairs Minister Lela Evans will take part in the opening ceremonies of the 2026 Labrador Winter Games this weekend in Happy Valley–Goose Bay.
The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the E.J. Broomfield Arena as the week-long sporting and cultural event gets underway.
The Labrador Winter Games, often referred to as the “Olympics of the North,” run from March 8 to 14 and bring together hundreds of athletes, volunteers and spectators from communities across Labrador.
First launched in 1983, the Games are held every three years and celebrate both traditional and modern sporting events that reflect Labrador’s culture and lifestyle.
Competitors take part in a range of events including snowshoe racing, cross-country skiing, volleyball and badminton, alongside more traditional competitions such as the Labrathon, Northern Games and dog team races.
The Games typically involve about 500 athletes and hundreds of volunteers, with teams representing regions and communities across Labrador competing for community pride during the week-long competition.
