Regiment rally past Huskies 3-2 in overtime

The Newfoundland Regiment overcame an early deficit to defeat the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 3-2 in overtime Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre in St. John’s.


Rouyn-Noranda strikes first just over six minutes into the game when Charles Laforest puts the Huskies ahead 1-0.


Newfoundland responds midway through the second period, with Dmitry Kubantsev scoring to tie the game.


The Huskies regain the lead before the end of the period as William Vezina makes it 2-1 heading into the second intermission.


The Regiment force overtime late in the third period when Alexis Michaud scores with 10:49 remaining in regulation. The goal is Michaud’s fifth of the season.


Louis-François Bélanger then completes the comeback 1:34 into overtime, scoring his first goal of the season to give Newfoundland the 3-2 victory.


Regiment goaltender Louis-Antoine Denault makes 20 saves to earn his first win of the season.


The two teams meet again Sunday afternoon as Newfoundland wraps up a six-game homestand. The rematch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Mary Brown’s Centre.
