Eastern Health has implemented visitor restrictions at the Waterford Hospital after a fire on Saturday afternoon.

Eastern Health said the fire occurred on one of the inpatient units.

At this time, the public is asked not to visit the facility and an update will be provided when visitation can safely resume.

A patient started a fire in a garbage bin that quickly spread. Several patients on the third floor were displaced as a result.

Portions of the building sustained extensive water damage. Employees had trouble locating the water shut-off for the sprinkler system.

There were no injuries.

Portions of the building have been open since 1854.
