Three drivers were arrested for impaired operation during separate RCMP traffic stops in Central Newfoundland over the weekend, police say

In the first incident, New-Wes-Valley RCMP responded around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, after receiving a report from a concerned resident about a possible impaired driver. Officers attended the residence of the vehicle’s owner and arrested a 43-year-old woman for impaired driving. Police said the woman became combative during the arrest, damaging police equipment.

She was taken to the detachment, where breath tests confirmed she was over the legal limit. Her vehicle was seized and impounded, and her driver’s licence was suspended. The woman is scheduled to appear in court at a later date on charges of impaired operation over 80 milligrams of alcohol and mischief under $5,000.

A second arrest occurred Sunday, Feb. 1, after Gander RCMP received a public report of a possible impaired driver leaving the Farewell Ferry Terminal. At about 5:15 p.m., officers located the vehicle on Gander Bay Road and conducted a traffic stop. A 41-year-old man was arrested for impaired operation following a roadside breath test.

Further breath samples provided at the detachment were below the criminal threshold. Police said the man was ticketed under the Liquor Control Act for having open alcohol in a vehicle. His vehicle was seized, and his licence was suspended for seven days under the provincial Highway Traffic Act.

Later that evening, around 5:30 p.m., Glovertown RCMP stopped a vehicle in Gambo after officers observed it operating with an expired registration. Police said the 50-year-old female driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested.

She was transported to the detachment, where breath tests indicated alcohol levels over the legal limit. Her vehicle was seized and impounded, her licence was suspended, and she will appear in court at a later date to face a charge of impaired operation over 80 milligrams.
