A St. John’s community organization has been recognized for its work supporting adult literacy in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Education Minister Bernard Dinn highlighted Stella’s Circle in the House of Assembly this week as the province’s recipient of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award.
The award is presented annually in each province and territory to learners, educators, volunteers, community organizations and businesses that support adult literacy and learning.
Dinn said Stella’s Circle was selected for its commitment to improving access to literacy programming and expanding opportunities for people facing barriers to education.
The organization launched a new foundational literacy and numeracy program in 2025 aimed at supporting learners who face additional challenges, including newcomers to the province. The program is designed for people who may not yet qualify for traditional Adult Basic Education programs.
Stella’s Circle provides a range of services in the community, including literacy education, employment support, mental health programming and affordable housing initiatives.
