Team Canada released a statement that said in part, "Right now, the hurt is real. We came here believing we could keep writing history, and when you believe that deeply, the final whistle is not easy to accept."

Canada is not a soccer country, but over the past few weeks, Canadians have become more interested in the World Cup as Canada had its best-ever World Cup performance.

The team reached the knockout stage for the first time and recorded its first World Cup knockout win.
