The provincial government is providing more than $1.2 million to Sport NL to support sport and recreation programs across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation Minister Andrea Barbour announced the funding Tuesday through the Provincial Physical Activity, Recreation and Sport Annual Funding Program.

The funding will support Sport NL's day-to-day operations and staffing, as well as athlete, coach and official development and sport governance.

It will also support programs including KidSportNL and the National Championship Travel Subsidy.

The province said the investment will help attract major amateur sporting events to Newfoundland and Labrador and support the annual Sport NL Summit, which is scheduled for Nov. 14 in St. John's.

The Provincial Physical Activity, Recreation and Sport Annual Funding Program provides financial support to sport and recreation organizations across the province.

The government said the organizations supported through the program collectively reach thousands of residents through community programs, school-based activities, Indigenous sport and recreation initiatives and Provincial Sport Organizations.

The funding is intended to help increase opportunities for residents to participate in physical activity, recreation and organized sport throughout the province.
