The Newfoundland and Labrador government is investing $6 million in new moose fencing and brush clearing projects aimed at reducing moose-vehicle collisions and improving safety on provincial highways.
The province said two new moose fencing projects will be completed in areas identified as having a high risk of collisions based on highway safety data.
On the Avalon Peninsula, four kilometres of fencing will be installed from the Foxtrap weigh scales to Round Pond. In western Newfoundland, 6.5 kilometres of fencing will be constructed along the Trans-Canada Highway from Glide Lake Road to Little Harbour.
Tenders have been issued for both projects, with construction expected to begin later this year.
The fencing projects will be complemented by additional brush-clearing work along provincial highways. The province said the work will improve visibility for motorists and help reduce the risk of collisions with wildlife.
The government said the investments are part of a broader, data-driven strategy to improve highway safety and protect motorists across Newfoundland and Labrador.
