The provincial government has introduced a new streamlined process for fish processing licences, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing application timelines.
Loyola O’Driscoll, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced the changes Tuesday, which include an updated Fish Processing Licence application and the creation of a new Conditional Processing Facility Licence.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture said the revised application process was developed in consultation with FFAW-Unifor and the Association of Seafood Producers.
According to the department, the updated application removes the requirement to identify sources of raw material and refines sections related to economic and employment benefits. It also simplifies planning requirements, including business and waste disposal plans.
The new Conditional Processing Facility Licence is designed for applicants planning to purchase, build or renovate a processing facility.
Existing applications will continue to be handled by the Fish Processing Licensing Board under the current system, with the board maintaining its role in the appeals process.
