Province Adds Freight Vessel to Improve Deliveries on Labrador North Coast

The Newfoundland and Labrador government says it is adding a second vessel to help move freight to communities along Labrador's North Coast during the busy summer shipping season.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Barry Petten announced that the vessel Astron W will join the MV Kamutik to provide dedicated freight service to the region, where communities rely heavily on marine transportation for essential goods and building supplies.
The province said the additional vessel is being deployed in response to high freight volumes, particularly construction materials that need to reach coastal communities during Labrador's short building season.
The Astron W, a temporarily contracted vessel in the provincial fleet, will operate as a freight-only service alongside the MV Kamutik. The government said the arrangement will increase shipping capacity, improve the consistency and timeliness of deliveries, and reduce pressure on passenger-freight services.
The enhanced service will remain in place during the early part of the shipping season, with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure monitoring operations and adjusting the vessel's deployment as needed.
