The provincial government will provide $50,000 to the Town of Harbour Grace towards the building of a replacement statue of Amelia Earhart that was stolen last month.
Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality Pam Parsons announced the funding today.
Once the Town has a project plan in place, the funding will be provided over two years, starting with $25,000 in 2025-26.
Amelia Earhart was the first female pilot to make a non-stop, solo transatlantic flight, which began in Harbour Grace in May 1932.
Parsons said, “The theft of the Amelia Earhart statue was a loss, not just to the Town of Harbour Grace, but to all who value courage, history, and the pioneering spirit she represents. Replacing it, with the help of support from the Provincial Government, is a powerful statement that we will not allow acts of disrespect to erase our shared heritage, reminding future generations that bold dreams can take flight from even the smallest places.”
