The federal government is investing $800,000 toward the construction of a new Regional SPCA St. John’s Community Engagement Centre, a project expected to open later this year.
The funding was announced Friday by federal Minister Joanne Thompson alongside SPCA St. John’s board chair Amanda Buis.
The new 10,000-square-foot facility will serve as both a modern animal shelter and an accessible, multi-purpose community space for residents of St. John’s.
The centre is expected to host inclusive activities and community events, while also offering education, recreation and health-related programming.
Animal welfare services will also be provided at the facility, including pet adoptions, veterinary services and a pet food bank operated by the St. John’s Regional SPCA.
Construction of the new building is scheduled to be completed by May 31, 2026.
