One dead, another seriously injured in fiery transport truck crash near Gull Pond Bridge

One man has died and another was seriously injured following a fiery collision involving two commercial transport trucks on the Trans-Canada Highway near Gull Pond Bridge.

The RCMP is investigating the crash, which occurred shortly after 2:15 a.m. on July 28.

Police responded to reports of a collision between two transport trucks on the highway. When emergency crews arrived, both vehicles were fully engulfed in flames.

The Badger Volunteer Fire Department, the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene.

The driver of a westbound tractor-trailer suffered serious injuries and was transported to hospital, where he remains under medical care.

The driver of the eastbound transport truck, a 47-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene to assist with the investigation, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has also been engaged.

The crash forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway for several hours while investigators examined the scene and provincial officials assessed damage to the roadway caused by the intense fire.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
