The federal government is providing $204,681 to support three Indigenous-led economic development projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The funding was announced Thursday by Fisheries Minister and St. John’s East MP Joanne Thompson in Miawpukek Mi’kamawey Mawi’omi, also known as Conne River.

The investments will support cultural infrastructure, Indigenous business development and specialized culinary training.

Miawpukek First Nation will receive $117,000 for upgrades and enhancements to its powwow grounds, an important cultural and tourism asset for the community.

Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation will receive $66,721 to host a series of business forums designed to help Indigenous businesses network, explore opportunities and build capacity.

A further $20,960 will support specialized Indigenous culinary training in the Bay of Islands area. The training will focus on traditional Mi’kmaq foodways, sustainable practices, land-based learning and the transfer of Indigenous cultural knowledge.

The funding is intended to strengthen Indigenous entrepreneurship, develop skills and support sustainable economic growth in communities across the province.
