A group of co-workers from Conception Bay South is celebrating after sharing a $1-million Atlantic 49 jackpot through their workplace lottery pool.

The group, known as Hayward’s Group, includes brothers Tony and Allan Porter along with colleagues Ed Pike, Colin Harvey, Wayne Pippy, Neil Porter, Kyle Peddle, Jonathan Summers and Dennis Eason.

Tony Porter said the news spread quickly after the winning ticket was checked.

“I called my brother Allan, and we went and got the ticket validated and came back to the office and started calling the group to tell them we were winners,” he said. “Everyone was excited and over the moon. Some people didn’t believe it.”

Atlantic 49 is a draw game available only in Atlantic Canada. It can be played on its own or added to a Lotto 6/49 ticket and offers a top prize of $1 million along with a guaranteed prize of $25,649 in every draw.

In addition to the jackpot, the group’s ticket also won smaller prizes on TAG and Lotto 6/49, bringing the total winnings to $1,000,013.

Jonathan Summers said he initially found it hard to believe the news.

Members of the group say they have a variety of plans for their share of the winnings, including buying homes, saving for children’s education, purchasing vehicles and taking vacations.

The winning ticket was purchased at Buddy’s Orangestore in Conception Bay South. The retailer will receive a one-per-cent seller’s prize.
