WorkplaceNL Marks National Day of Mourning for workplace fatalities
Friday was the National Day of Mourning to remember workers who lost their lives, were injured or suffered illness on the job.
In 2022, 30 people in Newfoundland and Labrador lost their lives due to their work. Eight from fatal accidents and 22 from occupational disease.
WorkplaceNL accepted 145 claims for work-related deaths over the past five years.
Bernard Davis, Minister Responsible for WorkplaceNL said “We continue to work to ensure that all workers in our province have the proper protections, legislation, and regulations to help prevent workplace incidents.”
Ann Martin, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for WorkplaceNL said "For every tragedy, countless loved ones are left behind. On the National Day of Mourning, we collectively renew our commitments to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses and deaths."
