WorkplaceNL lowers average employer assessment rate for 2027

WorkplaceNL is lowering its average employer assessment rate by 4.0 per cent in 2027, reducing the rate from $1.73 to $1.66 per $100 of assessable payroll.
The 2027 rate continues to include a temporary discount of $0.21. Individual employer rates will vary depending on the claims experience of their industry group.
WorkplaceNL says the lower average base assessment rate reflects growth in employer payroll, allowing system costs to be spread across a larger payroll base.
The organization also points to the financial position of its Injury Fund, which was 139.5 per cent funded as of December 31, 2025. Strong investment performance has helped WorkplaceNL maintain a discount that keeps the average assessment rate below the projected cost of the compensation system.
Since 2019, the discount has saved Newfoundland and Labrador employers approximately $160 million, while benefits and services for injured workers have improved and investments in workplace safety have continued.
" The lower average assessment rate for 2027 helps reduce costs for employers, while supporting our goal of maintaining a sustainable workers’ compensation system that protects benefits for workers and provides coverage for employers," said Elizabeth Lane, CEO of WorkplaceNL.
Lane also noted that the province recorded an all-time low lost-time injury rate and fewer workplace injury claims last year, emphasizing the importance of continued efforts to improve workplace safety.
Employers can further reduce their assessments through PRIME refunds by meeting workplace safety and return-to-work requirements.
The annual adjustment is based on changes in the average Consumer Price Index.
Employers will be able to view their individual 2027 assessment rates online through MyWorkplaceNL beginning in November.
