The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is warning the public about fraudulent telephone calls impersonating police officers in Labrador West.

The RNC says it has received multiple reports from individuals living outside Newfoundland and Labrador who received calls from 709-944-3405, a number formerly associated with the Officer in Charge of the Labrador City Detachment.

Call recipients reported that the individual on the other end claimed police had someone in custody before providing instructions in an apparent attempt to obtain additional information.

The RNC is reminding the public to be cautious when receiving unsolicited calls from individuals claiming to represent law enforcement, particularly when personal or financial information is requested.

Anyone receiving a suspicious call should end the conversation and contact their local police service directly to verify the information.

Police emphasize that law enforcement agencies and public officials will never demand payment over the phone as part of a judicial or investigative process. They also warn that caller ID information can be manipulated, meaning a familiar or local telephone number does not necessarily indicate a legitimate call.

Anyone wishing to report suspicious activity can contact the RNC at 709-729-8000.

Fraudulent calls can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
