Winter storm slams eastern Newfoundland


As of 6:30 am this morning the St. John's International Airport has received 18 cm of snow, and there is a lot more on the way.


Winter storm warnings remain in effect for the Avalon Peninsula North, Avalon Peninsula Southeast, Avalon Peninsula Southwest, the Bonavista Peninsula, Clarenville and vicinity, and St. John's and vicinity. There is a snowfall warning for the Burin Peninsula and a blowing snow advisory for Terra Nova.


Snowfall forecast for Saturday and Saturday night:

St. John's 40-60 cm

Carbonear 25-35 cm

Trepasssey 20-30 cm

Placentia 15-25 cm

Marystown 15-25 cm

Clarenville 15-25 cm


The winds will pick up later today resulting in blowing snow.


The storm has prompted a number of closures.


Travel

Roads on the Avalon and Burin Peninsula are snow covered there is drifting in some areas but visibility is fair.


Most arrivals and departures at the St. John's International Airport are cancelled.
