Where's The Food Survey Results Released
Food Producers Forum, a provincial non-profit, launched an online survey in the fall of 2022 to collect detailed information about community food production in our province.
Over 12 weeks, the online survey collected detailed information from 742 farmers, gardeners, hunters, foragers and fishers in 167 communities across the province.
The 36-page report includes lists and charts showing what kinds of food are being grown and gathered in Newfoundland and Labrador.
In 2022, these 742 survey participants produced 6.2 million pounds of local food. They included 700 gardeners, 650 foragers, 170 raising animals, 310 hunters, 500 fishers. The survey included 100 people who grow or gather food that they sell commercially.
Home food producers grew and gathered on average more than 500 pounds of food. Those who hunt, raise animals or fish each produced an average of 375 pounds of food.
