Video Showing Caribou Killing was not Filmed in NL

Officials say that a video circulating on social media showing the inhumane killing of a caribou was not filmed in this province, and is unrelated to the current investigation by enforcement officials of illegal caribou hunting in southern Labrador.

The video was filmed in Quebec, and enforcement officials in that province are investigating.

Within Newfoundland and Labrador, a moratorium on the hunting of George River caribou remains in place as the herd size remains at less than one percent of the abundance recorded in the early 1990s. The hunting of animals in the Mealy Mountain and Lac Joseph herds is currently prohibited under the Provincial Endangered Species Act.
