The Royal Canadian Navy has a new commander following a formal change of command ceremony held Tuesday in Hamilton, Ontario.

Vice-Admiral Dan Charlebois officially assumed command of the navy from Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee during a ceremony at His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Star.

The ceremony was presided over by General Jennie Carignan, who serves as Chief of the Defence Staff for the Canadian Armed Forces.

The leadership transition comes as the Royal Canadian Navy continues to carry out its role as Canada's maritime defence force. The navy is responsible for protecting Canadian sovereignty, supporting maritime trade and responding to emergencies and crises both domestically and internationally.
