The RCMP has recovered thousands of dollars of stolen merchandise from businesses in Carbonear.

Last Thursday there were a number of thefts from businesses in Carbonear. Two women from St. John’s are facing charges after the stolen merchandise was recovered.

At approximately 3:45 pm on Thursday, police received a report of a theft that just occurred from a clothing store in the Trinity Conception Square Mall.

Two female suspects had reportedly left the business with more than $1000 worth of stolen merchandise. From there the women entered a commercial taxi cab, as passengers, and left the area.

The taxi cab was located a short while later by RCMP Traffic Services East travelling eastbound on the Trans-Canada Highway near Middle Gull Pond.

A traffic stop was conducted and two women, both from St. John’s, were taken into police custody without incident. More than $3,200 worth of stolen merchandise was recovered.

Both women were transported to the detachment in Harbour Grace. The two were released from custody. They will appear in court at a later date.

One of the women provided a false name and identity and has been charged with obstruction, with further charges pending.

The investigation is continuing.
