The Census is due today (May 12, 2026).

The Census is mandatory, and failure to complete it can result in fines under the Statistics Act.

Census data is widely used across Canada to guide decisions that affect communities, services, and the economy.

Governments at all levels rely on it to plan programs and infrastructure—such as electoral boundaries, social benefits, schools, healthcare, transportation, and emergency services—based on population size and demographics. Indigenous communities and organizations use census information to support community planning, economic development, cultural preservation, and social services.

Community groups and organizations depend on census data to design employment programs, improve accessibility, and better support people with disabilities. Farm organizations use it to track agricultural trends, make financial decisions, and assess the impact of weather events.

Businesses use census insights to decide where to open locations, understand customer spending power, set insurance rates, and develop products. Individuals also benefit by using census data to choose where to live, negotiate salaries, and make informed education and career decisions.

Overall, census data helps ensure resources, services, and opportunities are aligned with the needs of the population.
