Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services offered tours of the new Urgent Care Centre located at the Unity Health Centre, 28 Stavanger Drive in St. John’s.
Carey says the urgent care centre is meant to be the "bridge between primary healthcare and the emergency room."
The centre will operate seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. While some patients will be seen with an appointment, walk-in service is also available.
While there is an ambulance bay, it is to take patients to the hospital for more severe symptoms, not to take people to the centre.
Urgent care centres are designed for those with sprains, strains and minor breaks, skin infections, burns and cuts, respiratory infections with fever, cough and/or shortness of breath, stomach illness with nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea and urinary tract infections. They are meant to alleviate the strain on emergency departments.
