Standing Fish Price Setting Panel sets minimum price for summer shrimp
The Standing Fish Price Setting Panel has set the minimum price for summer shrimp at $0.90/lb. The FFAW says that price is unsupported by market realities and argues that in recent months the market has shown improvements.
The FFAW Shrimp Negotiating Committee’s final offer was 1.36/lb this year. Two months ago, the panel selected the FFAW position of $1.42 over the Association of Seafood Producers' offer of $0.90.
FFAW-Unifor Sullivan President Keith Sullivan doesn't understand how the price has been set so low.
“The Panel’s decision yesterday is incomprehensible. Taking into consideration the significant increase in operational costs, particularly for fuel, fish harvesters will not come close to breaking even at this insultingly low price.”
“The Panel has absolutely not justified themselves in selecting this price,” he says.
The FFAW is calling on the provincial government to take meaningful steps toward addressing members' concerns.
