The City of St. John’s says additional traffic calming measures will be installed on several streets in 2026 as part of efforts to reduce speeds and improve road safety.
Temporary speed cushions are scheduled to be installed this spring and removed in late fall on five streets across the city. The locations include Great Eastern Avenue between Iceland Place and Ladysmith Drive, Heffernan’s Line from Back Line to Main Road, Middleton Street from Harding Road to Newfoundland Drive, Old Bay Bulls Road between Elliott’s Road and Rosemarkie Street, and Parsons Road from Ennis Avenue to Logy Bay Road.
Following the trial period, households on those streets will be surveyed to determine whether residents support permanent installation. The city says at least 60 per cent of survey respondents must support the measure for the speed cushions to remain permanently. If that threshold is not reached, the installations will be removed.
The city also says two streets that tested temporary traffic calming in 2025 will receive permanent speed cushions this year. Those are Empire Avenue between Circular Road and Rennie’s Mill Road, and Smithville Crescent from Strawberry Marsh Road to Long Pond Road.
A trial on Gleneyre Street between Birchwynd Street and Virginia Road will not move forward with permanent installation after only 52 per cent of survey respondents supported the measure, below the required level.
