Snow expected for most of Newfoundland as next storm approaches

Snow is expected to move into southwestern Newfoundland this afternoon and will spread to all areas overnight.


Along the south coast from Port aux Basques to the Burin Peninsula snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 cm is expected. Wind will gust to 100 km/h over most areas, in the Wreckhouse area gusts to 120 km/h are possible.


The Avalon Peninsula will receive 10 to 15 cm of snow but over higher terrain, 30 cm is possible.


Lesser snowfall amounts are expected in central and northeastern Newfoundland. Anywhere from 5 to 15 cm is expected.


Minimal snowfall amounts are expected along the west coast. 5 to 10 cm is expected but higher terrain areas near Corner Brook and Bonne Bay will receive near 20 cm.


On Thursday afternoon the Avalon Peninsula will see precipitation transition from snow to rain.


By Thursday night precipitation will wind down across the south coast and the Avalon Peninsula. Snow will continue across central and most of the west coast through Thursday night and into Friday morning.


Marine Atlantic has cancelled crossings scheduled for today.
