Saltwire Slashes 109 Jobs

Saltwire, the newspaper company that owns newspapers in this province has notified 109 staff members that they will be laid off permanently.

Of those 109 employees, 25 are in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The company cited the devastating impact of COVID-19 on advertising as the cause.

On March 24, Saltwire announced that nearly 40 percent of its staff was being temporarily laid off and operations were being suspended at some publications.

Combined with the Chronicle Herald's existing community newspaper holdings, in 2017 the company published 35 titles overall, mainly acquired from Transcontinental Media.
