A new facility aimed at improving health care in rural Newfoundland and Labrador officially opened on Wednesday in Grand Falls-Windsor.

NL Health Services, alongside several community partners, celebrated the grand opening of the Rural Innovation Hub, a new centre designed to support the development, testing and implementation of innovative approaches to rural health care.

Located inside the Excite Building in Grand Falls-Windsor, the hub will provide a collaborative space for health-care professionals, researchers and community organizations to work together on solutions to challenges facing rural communities.

The facility includes a simulation training lab that replicates a hospital environment, allowing health-care workers to participate in hands-on training and demonstrations closer to home. Officials say the lab will help clinicians serving rural and remote communities prepare for a wide range of clinical situations while supporting ongoing learning as technology and medical practices evolve.

Ron Johnson, interim CEO of NL Health Services, said the project is focused on strengthening health care in rural regions while reducing travel for patients and providers.

Grand Falls-Windsor Mayor Mike Browne said the project represents an important partnership between organizations working to build innovation and economic development in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.

Officials say the Rural Innovation Hub was designed with future expansion in mind. Planned future phases include human factors testing, expanded clinical trials and increased collaboration with industry partners.

The project is a partnership involving NL Health Services, the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor, Memorial University’s Faculties of Medicine and Nursing, the South and Central Health Foundation, Excite Corporation, the Northpine Foundation, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
