The City of St. John's says construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive is expected to begin April 13.
The project is scheduled to continue through to the end of 2026 and represents the final phase of the multi-year Major’s Path and Portugal Cove Road Improvements project.
City officials say the roundabout is designed to improve traffic flow and increase safety for both drivers and pedestrians at the busy intersection. Plans also include new active transportation crossings, connections to a shared-use path along Major’s Path, and links to the Virginia River Trail system.
Traffic will be maintained throughout construction, but motorists should expect disruptions, including lane reductions and delays.
Under the traffic management plan, one lane in each direction will remain open at all times on Portugal Cove Road. On Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive, one lane in each direction will be maintained during peak hours — from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. — with traffic potentially reduced to a single shared lane outside those times.
Pedestrian access will be maintained during construction.
Timelines may change depending on weather and operational requirements, the City added.
