As patios, beaches and outdoor gatherings become busier across the province, the RNC is reminding residents to take precautions and look out for one another during the summer season.
Alcohol and drugs can impair judgment and reduce awareness, potentially increasing the risk of harm. The RNC is encouraging people attending parties, bars, beaches and other social events to plan ahead and discuss safety measures with friends before heading out.
Among the recommendations, police advise using a buddy system and staying with trusted friends, keeping mobile phones charged, and sharing locations with family or friends when appropriate.
The RNC is also urging people to keep personal belongings secure, watch drinks being prepared and avoid leaving beverages unattended.
Police say anyone showing signs of illness or loss of consciousness should receive medical attention immediately.
The advisory also stresses the importance of arranging safe transportation home. Residents are encouraged not to drive while impaired and to use a designated driver, taxi or ride-share service. Police further advise against accepting rides from drivers who are not affiliated with a licensed transportation service or verified through a ride-share application.
Anyone who observes suspicious activity is asked to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000. Emergencies and crimes in progress should be reported by calling 911.
Anonymous tips can also be provided through Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
