RNC urges residents to practice personal safety ahead of large summer gatherings
((Reminder the following))
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is encouraging residents to practice personal safety as thousands descend on the capital city to attend shows and events in the coming days and weeks.
The RNC will have an increased presence at upcoming music festivals and the province’s largest garden party, to respond to incidents and promote public safety.
By planning ahead, having open conversations with friends, and being situationally aware, you can have an experience to remember for all the right reasons. Here are a few simple tips to help ensure your summer event experience is a safe one:
· If you are attending an event with a group of friends agree to a buddy system. Despite your best intentions, in crowded spaces it is easy to get separated, so designate a meeting point in case you get lost or split up.
· Those attending events with children should consider wearing bright colored clothing and work with young kids to ensure they know their name and telephone number. Encourage them to reach out to event security or police for help if they become separated from family.
· Keep your phone charged and share your location with friends and family.
· Keep your belongings secure at all times.
· Drink responsibly.
· Do not drive impaired. Arrange a sober ride home, get a cab or book a ride-share. If you suspect an impaired driver, call 911.
· Report suspicious activities to the RNC by 709-729-8000. Non-emergency complaints can be made by using the RNC’s online reporting system. To report anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
