The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is reminding cyclists and motorists to follow bicycle safety rules as warmer weather brings more riders onto roads across the province.

With children spending more time outdoors during the summer months, bicycle traffic is expected to increase in many communities.

The RNC urged motorists to slow down in residential areas, avoid distractions and remain alert for cyclists in an effort to reduce the risk of collisions and injuries.

Police also reminded drivers of provincial passing-distance requirements. Motorists must leave at least one metre of space when passing a cyclist on roads with speed limits of 60 kilometres per hour or less. On roads with posted speed limits above 60 km/h, the minimum passing distance increases to 1.5 metres.

The RNC also encouraged cyclists to take precautions to improve their visibility and safety on the road.

Recommended safety measures include wearing a properly fitted helmet, using bright or reflective clothing, ensuring bicycles are in good working condition and equipped with reflectors, and following traffic signs and signals.

Cyclists are also advised to ride on the right side of the road in the same direction as traffic, use hand signals when turning, and avoid wearing headphones while riding.

Police further recommended that cyclists walk their bicycles through crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers before crossing, stay off sidewalks and yield to pedestrians at intersections.
