The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has launched a new online reporting system aimed at reducing pressure on emergency phone lines and improving access to police services for non-emergency incidents.
The new portal allows residents to submit reports online when an immediate police response is not required. Users are guided through a series of steps to complete and submit a police report.
Incidents that can be reported through the system include lost property, thefts under $5,000, thefts from motor vehicles, property damage, vehicle damage, motor vehicle collisions and fraud involving less than $5,000.
Police say reports submitted online will be investigated in the same manner as complaints received by phone or in person.
The RNC said the service is intended for people who have access to and are comfortable using online platforms. Residents can still report non-emergency incidents by contacting their local detachment by phone or visiting in person.
Police are reminding the public to call 911 for crimes in progress or situations requiring an immediate response.
The force is also asking individuals who have already submitted a report not to file duplicate complaints. Anyone who has submitted a report should wait to be contacted by an officer before providing additional information.
The RNC continues to encourage members of the public to report crimes directly to police for investigation.
