RNC charges impaired driver after boy hit by vehicle

The RNC has charged a 32-year-old man after a vehicle-pedestrian collision in St. John’s on Thursday evening.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Thorburn Road and Larkhall Street, where a six-year-old boy had been struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect managed to flee the area before police arrived. Officers were able to quickly locate the suspect vehicle and make an arrest thanks to a member of the public.

The man, Tyler Day, failed a roadside screening test. He was transported to RNC Headquarters, where he subsequently failed a breath test.

He faces charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene resulting in bodily harm, operating over the legal limit, and breaching a probation order. He was also found to be wanted on outstanding warrants. His license was suspended, and his vehicle impounded. Day was held to appear in court.
