Members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary were conducting routine patrols in the Kenmount Road area when they observed a vehicle speeding at 82 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Monday evening.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver changed lanes without signaling and ran a red light. The vehicle continued to drive erratically, passing through a construction zone and heading eastbound in oncoming traffic.
The driver eventually pulled over, and officers immediately noticed signs of impairment, including a strong smell of alcohol and watery eyes. The driver was taken to RNC headquarters for further testing, where he failed both breathalyzer tests with readings of 170 mg and 160 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood—well above the legal limit.
The driver was charged with impaired driving, had his vehicle impounded, and was issued several summary offence tickets. He has been released to appear in court at a later date.
