Newfoundland and Labrador residents are being encouraged to take steps to reduce wildfire risks around their homes, even though the 2026 forest fire season has officially ended.

The provincial government says preparations are already underway to improve wildfire response capabilities following a season that saw numerous fires across Labrador.

In a statement to the House of Assembly, the government thanked residents and emergency responders for their efforts during the 2026 wildfire season, describing the emergency response in Labrador as well-managed.

The government says it is on track with its commitment to improve community safety, including more than $7 million in funding for firefighting and emergency resources and the return of the fifth water bomber to the provincial fleet.

Officials are also reminding homeowners that simple preventative measures can help reduce the risk of wildfire damage.

These include keeping wood piles away from buildings, clearing leaves and debris from gutters and maintaining properties to reduce potential fire hazards.

Communities can also access funding through the Community Wildfire Prevention and Mitigation Program to identify local wildfire risks, implement preventative measures and improve emergency planning.

Applications for the program are currently open, with the deadline extended to November 30, 2026.

Communities interested in applying can contact the provincial government at FireSmart@gov.nl.ca for more information.
