As Canada Day celebrations get underway across Newfoundland and Labrador, provincial officials are reminding residents to check local fire conditions before setting off personal fireworks.
The provincial government says fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited under Forest Fire Regulations whenever the Fire Weather Index reaches yellow (high risk), orange (very high risk) or red (extreme risk) levels. Officials warn that violations can result in significant penalties ranging from $50,000 to $150,000.
Residents planning to use fireworks are encouraged to consult the daily Fire Weather Index through the province's wildfire prevention resources to determine whether conditions allow their use.
Anyone who spots a wildfire is asked to report it immediately by calling 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).
