RCMP warns ATV operators of dangerous trap set on ATV trail

Writer: Web WritersWeb Writers

The RCMP is warning ATV riders about a serious danger on an ATV trail between Bay Bulls and Witless Bay.

On Monday an ATV operator, travelling on a section of the trail near Dean’s Road, was knocked off his ATV after striking a ¾-inch steel cable that was strung across the trail. The cable was hung at neck height and struck the operator’s helmet. The rider, who was travelling at a reduced rate of speed, was incredibly fortunate to survive without serious injuries.

Police also received reports of trees having been cut and placed in a manner that would block sections of the railbed trail.

Ferryland RCMP says this is a very serious offence and it poses a severe risk to all off-road vehicle users. If convicted, in the case of causing bodily harm, a person could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, and in the case of causing death, to imprisonment for life.

Ferryland RCMP asks off-road vehicle operators to be cautious and travel at reduced speeds. The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
