The RCMP is reminding renters to browse safely and be wary of online rental scams following a recent report in the Gander area.
Last week, a homeowner was approached by several individuals about a rental apartment posted online. However, the owner of the home had not listed the space for rent and notified the police as he was concerned about potential renters falling victim to a scam.
At this time, there are no confirmed incidents of any potential renters who sent money to the fake landlord, but anyone who may be the victim of a rental scam is urged to come forward.
As a renter, there are some precautionary steps you can take to protect yourself from falling victim to scams.
Watch for red flags: rent that is cheaper than similar listings in the area, a request for a deposit before you see the listing or sign a lease, listings that only show the outside of the building and requests to send money outside of the country are all reasons to be suspicious.
Go to the address to ensure that the listing is truthful and accurate. Use the Internet to see actual images of the rental. Arrange to do a walk-through of the unit. Research the address to ensure it is not a duplicate post. You can conduct a reverse image search to see if the photos were used elsewhere.
Ensure a proper tenancy agreement is drafted and signed by both parties. This agreement should include the names and addresses of the landlord. Ask the landlord to show picture identification as proof that they are the person named in the document. While it is not a requirement that they produce identification, the renter should be suspicious if they refuse.
Choose a currency method other than cash for payment of rent or deposits, and do not send money or provide credit card information to someone without verifying what you are paying for.
Ask a trusted friend or family member for their opinion on the advertisement.
If you believe that you are the victim of a rental scam, report it to the police.
