RCMP unveils new look for front-line police vehicles after more than 30 years

Canadians will soon begin seeing a new look on RCMP front-line police vehicles as the national police service rolls out its first major cruiser redesign in more than three decades.
The RCMP announced Monday that the updated design features white doors on a black base with high-visibility reflective graphics, a change aimed at making police vehicles easier to recognize in all conditions, including day and night, and in both rural and urban communities across Canada.
According to the RCMP, the redesigned vehicles were created to improve visibility while maintaining a distinctive national identity. Provinces, territories and municipalities that contract RCMP policing services will also have the option to include local identifiers to reflect regional needs while preserving a consistent RCMP appearance.
The new vehicles are expected to begin appearing on Canadian roads later this summer. The transition will occur gradually, with existing patrol vehicles remaining in service until they reach the end of their operational lifespan. During the changeover, both the current and new vehicle designs will be used alongside one another.
The RCMP said the phased rollout is intended to support cost-effective fleet replacement while ensuring uninterrupted policing services.
The force also acknowledged concerns about police impersonation, saying the updated design includes distinctive markings to help officers and vehicles stand out from non-police vehicles. The RCMP advises anyone uncertain about whether they are dealing with a legitimate police officer or vehicle to contact their local RCMP detachment to verify the vehicle number, licence plate or officer's identity. Anyone who feels unsafe should lock their doors and call 911 or their local emergency number.
The redesign marks the first significant update to the appearance of RCMP front-line vehicles in more than 30 years and is part of the organization's broader efforts to modernize its fleet while enhancing safety, visibility and public recognition.
