RCMP seizes 75 cartons of contraband cigarettes

A 62-year-old Allan’s Island man is in a heap of trouble after RCMP seized 75 cartons of contraband cigarettes on Allan’s Island.

Canada Post Postal Inspectors alerted RCMP to a number of suspicious packages destined for a resident of Allan’s Island.

The investigation led to the arrest of the man at his residence on Wednesday where he was found in possession of contraband tobacco that originated in Ontario. The man now faces charges under the Federal Excise Act 2001, for possession of unstamped tobacco, and under the Provincial Revenue Administration Act for possession of contraband tobacco.

He was released from custody and is set to attend court on June 9, 2021.

The investigation is ongoing.
