RCMP Arrest Man For Several Arsons in Happy Valley-Goose Bay

The RCMP have arrested 22-year-old Michael Katshinak of Sheshatshiu for allegedly committing arson on two cabins and a shed in the area of Edwards Brook on Route 500, approximately 75 km outside of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday RCMP received a report of a cabin fire. Police and the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture attended the scene and learned of two more fires in the area.

Witnesses observed an unknown man running in the woods and then saw the same man sitting on the side of the road with what looked to be a rifle. RCMP Police Dog Services were called in to assist and the highway was temporarily blocked off.

Katshinak, who was found in possession of two Airsoft rifles, was located on the side highway and was taken into custody without incident.

The accused faces three counts of arson, two counts of break and entry, mischief, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of stolen property.

The investigation is ongoing.
