Much of Newfoundland will contend with rain, fog and gusty winds today as a weather system moves across the province, although improving conditions are expected in western and southwestern regions later in the day.

Rain is expected across eastern Newfoundland, including the Avalon Peninsula, where rainfall amounts of up to 10 millimetres are expected. Fog will linger through much of the day, while strong southerly winds gusting to 50 km/h will shift to the northwest by afternoon. Temperatures in the St. John's area are expected to fall to about 7 C later in the day.

Central Newfoundland will see some of the wettest conditions. Areas including Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor and the Bay of Exploits are forecast to receive an additional five to 10 millimetres of rain Monday after heavy overnight rainfall. Cooler air moving into the region could result in rain mixing with snow in parts of the Bay of Exploits and higher terrain before precipitation tapers off.

Northern sections of the island, including Green Bay-White Bay and the Northern Peninsula, may also experience a mix of rain and snow, particularly over higher elevations. Gusty northerly winds of up to 50 km/h are expected.

Conditions are expected to improve across western Newfoundland as the day progresses. Rain is forecast to end during the morning in areas including Corner Brook, Gros Morne and Channel-Port aux Basques, followed by clearing skies. High temperatures will range from 12 C to 15 C in many western communities.

The warmest weather is expected along the southwest coast, where Bay St. George could reach 15 C under clearing afternoon skies, while Channel-Port aux Basques is forecast to see a high of 14 C with sunny conditions developing.

Across the province, strong northerly and northwesterly winds will develop behind the departing system, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 km/h in several regions.
