Provincial Food Network Project receives $199,100 in new funding

The Commission for Environmental Cooperation is helping vulnerable communities prepare for the impacts of climate change and has selected the Provincial Food Network for new funding of $199,100.

The project was one of 14 chosen out of more than 240 applications received from Canada, the United States and Mexico.

This new funding will complement funds already contributed by Memorial University’s Office of Public Engagement, Mitacs, the province’s Department of Industry, Energy and Technology along with a major federal funding from the Community Sustainability Recovery Fund. In total, more than $408,000 has been raised for this project.

The Provincial Food Network is helping build earth-sheltered greenhouses for year-round food production in three communities, and purchasing solar panels to free an existing farm from fossil fuels and a walk-behind tractor that has turned three-and-a-half days of gruelling farm work into a fifteen-minute chore. This support will expand local food production and support community education in key food production skills.

There will be 15 sites across the province.
