Province to adopt a definition of anti-Semitism

The Provincial Government will adopt a definition of anti-Semitism today.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance defines anti-Semitism as:

“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

A request was made to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador from local Jewish communities on an approach that is also advocated by the League for Human Rights, B’nai Brith Canada.

This definition of anti-Semitism is being adopted along with a pledge to continue the dialogue on anti-Semitism and to continue to demonstrate support for the Jewish community.

There will be a proclamation signing this afternoon at Confederation Building. Minister Gerry Byrne will be joined by representatives of the Jewish community.
