The Newfoundland and Labrador government has announced a series of investments aimed at strengthening wildfire suppression capabilities and emergency response resources across Labrador.
The province said the measures are intended to improve wildfire preparedness and help protect communities as wildfire risks continue to be a concern in Labrador.
Among the initiatives announced is the continuation of planning work to establish infrastructure in Wabush that would support a seasonal waterbomber presence in Labrador West. The province said the move would enhance wildfire response capacity in the region.
The government is also providing $66,500 through the Fire Vehicles and Equipment Fund to support fire departments across Labrador with equipment purchases and upgrades.
In addition, two dedicated structural protection units will be acquired and stationed in Wabush and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The specialized equipment can be deployed throughout Labrador to help protect homes and buildings threatened by wildfires.
The province also announced the creation of six new wildland firefighter positions dedicated to Labrador, increasing firefighting resources available in the region.
As part of broader wildfire prevention efforts, the government said it will continue working with Labrador communities to develop future projects under the Community Wildfire Prevention and Mitigation Program. The initiative builds on $150,000 already allocated for wildfire mitigation projects currently underway in Labrador City, Port Hope Simpson and Mary’s Harbour.
